Day 1 of NBA Summer League Recap

For many of the highly touted players who played in yesterday's NBA Summer League, it was a good one.
In the first game, there were two guys that many wanted to see g at it and got exactly what they wanted with Perry Jones the III for OKC and Sullinger for the Celtics. Despite both guys dropping in the draft lower than expected, PJIII had 16pts and 8 reb, and Sullinger ended up with a huge 20pt outing in which he showed a full array of skills. Among all the solid debut performances, the most impressive was Andrew Nicholson from Orlando, who scored 24 pts , grabbed 12 boards and block 2 shots. Very good news for Orlando, seeing that their probably going to need an inside presence immediately to replace  Dwight Howard! Keep your eyes on the Summer league action to get an early glimpse of the in coming talent....

NBA Summer League Begins

This is where you get to see a glimpse of what your teams draft night really looks like,  NBA Summer League. Rookies and young unsigned invites get to get out and go at it and make a statement, good or bad.
Last year's summer league was cancelled but its back this summer with lots of young guns waiting to get to work. We've seen surprises and disappointments in summer league play that carries over to the regular season. This year will run two weeks, first week in Orlando and second week runs in Las Vegas. Today play begins at 11:00am on NBA TV between the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando followed by OKC vs. Boston @ 1pm. There are also 2 games following at 3pm & 5pm. We will keep an eye on who does what during these two weeks. Perry Jones III could end up being the piece to help get OKC over the top (which I think they're on their way either way) immediately. It'll be interesting to see how he plays today and throughout the summer!
Summer, summer, summer time!

USA Olympic Roster Revealed: Revamped But Ready

Well its in, the 2012 USA Olympic Basketball Team roster is as follows. Kobe Bryant...Kevin Love....Tyson Chandler....Kevin Durant....Russell Westbrook.....Chris Paul...LeBron James...James Harden...Carmelo Anthony...Deron Williams...Andre Iquodala.... and Blake Griffin!!!!  At first glance at this roster of course there are huge names present but what about the huge names that are missing?  Due to injury the anticipated names of Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh are missing. Huge losses for the USA squad especially Dwight and Bosh, seeing that the team is left with not much size inside. With the post play of Chandler, Griffin, and Love combined with the post defensive abilities of LeBron and Iquodala, Coach K is sure to make it work. Other than post men, there are absolutely no points of lack what so ever on this team. This is going to be something to witness!!! Running, great shooters, high flyers and strong defenders line this roster and promise to provide a gold medal and crazy excitement for the world to enjoy!

Steve Nash to LA? Someone's Front Office Needs A Makeover

A few days ago, 38 yr old Steve Nash was offered and agreed to a deal from the Los Angeles Lakers. In Laker nation, many are over joyed, which seems to be more about "something" happening more so than it being Nash.
Let me make this short and sweet..... the Lakers were in dyer need of young legs, speed and defense at the point guard position and the Lakers front office went out and got the exact opposite!!! We have tons of respect for Steve Nash and all that he has accomplished in his long career but if your team needs speed and defense at point, Steve's cell # probably shouldn't be the # you call.......I mean, really!!! For LA's sake, I hope they can make it work. He does deserve a ring.

Heat's Ring on LeBron's Legacy: Help or Harm?

"Its about ---- time", were the words that LeBron James yelled out as the game clock ticked to zero in the decisive game 5 of this years NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the OKC Thunder. After 8 seasons, countless teammates, two different franchises, and lots of scrutiny, he finally got that championship ring after teaming up with two olympian and all-stars in Chris Bosh and DWayne Wade.
Two years ago, many people, including former hall of famers, criticized LeBron after his highly publicized "The Decision" where in LeBron chose to announce Miami as his choice of what team he would join the following season. Many thought he chose the easy way out and said that "MJ'' would have never done that, teaming up with his league's equals (Bird, Magic, or Isaiah) in order to get over the hump. Yeah Jordan had Scottie but Scottie wasn't a proven champion prior to playing with Mike as was Wade when Lebron arrived and who was Bosh on that squad? Magic had Kareem and Worthy but Kareem was past his prime and Worthy thrived as a great finisher largely due to playing with the best full court, fast breaking PG ever in Magic himself. Kobe won with Shaq......and without him on the team that he's always played with and when the Lakers had down years, though he threatened to leave, he stayed and got back to the mountain top.
The question is, what would LeBron's first ring had meant if he had stayed and won it in Cleveland?
What if he hadn't taken the "easy way out" as many call it? Besides he made it to the finals with a Cleveland team a few years back with San Antonio where in his lack of offensive versatility was exposed by Bruce Bowen. What would that have meant to his legacy, to bring life to Cleveland, a city that has been haunted by failing sports squads across the board for many years, to bring a ring to a franchise that was bottom of the barrel when he arrived, to bring a championship to the people in his home town? If he had stayed on his own mountain? Shouldered the load and brought the Cavs with him? Wouldn't he be well on his way to being considered by most, the G.O.A.T? Imagine...just imagine.
Truth is, we'll  never know if Lebron has what it takes to carry his team hands down to a ring without the obvious most talented starting 5 in basketball. We'll never know.

MJ's take on it all.....

Ricky Rubio's Impressive But Short Season

Many speculated two years ago, that when Ricky Rubio was drafted high but unable to play immediately for the Minnesota Timberwolves due to his unresolved contract in Europe, that he probably wouldn't pan out to live up to half of the hype anyway. Why? Well despite knowing that he had been playing professionally in Europe for a few years already even though he was 18-19 yrs. old at the time, performed incredibly and achieved champion status while doing so, people still thought that he wouldn't be athletic enough nor tough enough. Well at the start of this season it was time for Rubio to prove the haters wrong or show the Timberwolves genius and the latter he did. Ricky Rubio immediately made an impact the way that he had his whole life and thats by being a very clever and fluid floor general. He got the ball to players in the right place at the right time. He also provided enough of an offensive threat to keep offense honest as well. He quieted the doubters from the start. Proved a lot of people wrong. This kid can play and it was evident every time he stepped on the floor. Unfortunately, his rookie season was court short last week as Rubio suffered a season ending injury but with rookie #'s of 10.6 points per, 8.2 assist per and 4.2 rebounds per, its plain to see that the Timberwolves have something special and with the young athletic players around him, the sky is the limit!!!

Seminoles Reign Surpreme

Florida State would have been no ones pick to win it all Friday considering that they would have to beat #6 Duke and #3UNC consecutively to do so. Well on Saturday in the semi final game against Duke they fought to keep Duke at bay for the majority of the contest with their aggressiveness, length, and interior athleticism. They shot the ball very well and played the game with a certain measure of confidence helped them to sustain. After that upset, knowing how they had blown UNC out earlier in the regular season, being led by the strengthen wisdom of Coach Hamilton and knowing how the roll that the Tarheels are on, a lot of people counted the Seminoles out. What they didn't consider was, what if the confidence carried over? What if the Seminoles look at it like, "we beat both of them this season already and know what it takes." Just like Duke was missing an intricate piece Ryan Kelly, UNC was missing John Henson. Obviously FSU doesn't play the pity game because they came into Sunday as if they were the #1 seed, as if they were the regular season champions. Though Carolina made a push near late in the second half to bring it to within 1, FSU went on to win its first ever ACC Tournament Championship. Will, determination and consistency pays off. No be surprised by anything that FSU may do in the NCAA Tournament either. Congrats to the NOLES well deserved.

Big East Battles: Day 3

Day 3 of the Big East Tournament took place Thursday and was action packed as usual. Plenty of down to the wire, clutch play, overtime, buzzer beater, lead shifting type of action starring the tough playing Big East squads. Being from ACC country, I still have to admit that in recent history, the Big East offers the best conference tournament in college basketball. What's the recipe for this consistent, high-end play. Well in my opinion, the tough defensive style of play with recent Big East squads help to set the tone for exciting tournament play. The overall quality of the  history between the programs between teams like Syracuse, Georgetown, and UConn, greatly contributes as well. Few years back, there was a Syracuse game that went to 6 overtimes, an unbelievable competition of will that will go down in tourney history. In the third day of this 2012 tourney winners include #2 Syracuse in a tightly played game with a talented but inconsistent UConn team after they upset West Virginia a day prior, #23 Notre Dame over USF in a overtime battle,  Cincinnati upset Georgetown in a nail biter, and Louisville takes down higher ranked Marquette. So as you can see from just the number of upsets, the next two days are poised to deliver more of that good ole, can't miss action for us all to sit back and enjoy. In this tourney, you never know what will happen next....Stay tuned!!!

Rondo Makes Trade Talk Look Ridiculous

Being that Rondo is the Celtics scrappiest defender, quickest overall player, and deadliest penetrator, talking about trading him from a team where everyone else is as old as Moses was already silly, but Sunday made that whole idea sound even worse! Sunday against the over hyped Jeremy Lin, Rajon Rondo put up an Oscar Robinson like stat line by posting 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 20 assist! When I saw this developing, I was in disbelief but should not have been. These are unusual #'s for most lil guards in the league but not Rondo. He is probably the most overall active player in the league. Never stops moving, scrapping, diving running etc. He's like a nat as a defender, crashes the boards with the trees, and attacks off the dribble with the best of them. This isn't the first time Rondo has had super triple doubles though. He has actually had some of his best statistical games in previous playoffs which initiated him being brought up in the "best point guard in the NBA" convo in the first place. This past Sunday may have topped them all though. Only Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain have ever put up at least 18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assist in a game. Crazy stuff. I'm sure there are plenty of teams who wouldn't mind having a PG with that type of talent in their line up!!! I hope Danny Ainge wouldn't be that silly.....

Revenge in the First Degree

What better way to get revenge on an unnecessary foul in an all-star game, that broke your nose and left you with a slight concussion than to drop 33pts in a win, on the accused with a protective mask on just a week later. Thats exactly what Kobe Bryant did Sunday vs. the Miami Heat. In a 10pt win, Kobe had a stellar performance in which he shot over 60% and had solid games from his supporting cast, including the bench. With everyone on the Heat wagon, and everyone talking Durant/James only for MVP Kobe rises to the occasion to further prove why he still has the NBA throne on lockdown.

Round 2: UNC vs. Duke....Judgement Day

The day has come. Now after the incredible, down to the wire battle that we saw in Chapel Hill just a few weeks back, the rematch is upon us. On top of the memorable last second 3 point basket to win at the buzzer by Duke's Austin River's, the under dog position that Duke was in leading into that game, the irony has risen, being that this game will decide the ACC regular season champs. The excitement is in the air, the Kville campers are restless, and fans are anticipating

The Masked Mamba

Well after the ridiculous, completely uncalled for foul on Kobe Bryant from D'Wayne Wade during the freaking All-Star game (because he was upset that he didn't get a call on the other end), Bryant's nose began to bleed. Come to find out his nose was broken and he suffered a concussion all on that punk of a foul that was committed. However, as usual, Kobe defies the odds and steps past obstacles, which in this case is a protective mask. First game after All-Star break, Kobe comes out, masked up and drops 31!!! Seemed like possibly a little hate, especially seeing that Kobe passed Michael Jordan as all time leading scorer in All-Star game. Either way it was way too aggressive of a foul for any game, being that he never made a play on the ball and raked down on his head, neck area. So now masked up, Kobe will meet with public hater #1 Sunday as the Heat and Lakers square off. Beware of the masked man. Payback is a.......

The Parents: A Youth Basketball Coaches Biggest Obstacle

In my few years of coaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade boys AAU basketball and varsity girls high school basketball, there have been quite a few things that standout to me as constants more than other things, one being the influence of the parents mindset on the player and the coach/player interaction and relationship. Its unbelievable how parents bring there child to your program, that you do planning, preparation, giving lots of time and hard work to see out but then turn right around and want to go against you as a coach in many ways, as if you are insufficient. What's funny is, mot of the parents are TOTALLY delusional  about the game of basketball as a whole and there child's own game. The problem stems from a selfish mindset of the parent from the outset (which is like poison to a young player), where in the parents agenda is for their child to be highly praised, glorified and touted. Every parent prematurely views their"baby" as a superstar. They come in feeling as if their child is the "next big thing". A very self centered mindset that is all about their child, giving very little emphasis to TEAM! This gets the young player comfortable withbucking against their coach and ok with challenging authority. That's the foundation for all the other problems that follow; they're not getting enough minutes, they should be used in a different capacity, they shouldn't be coming off of the bench, accusations of the coach having favorites or just not liking their child, on and on and on! Its embedded in the child's mind so then the child's scope of the game becomes self centered and based upon only the most flashy, hyped parts of the game like the shots, fancy dribble moves, and dunks. The new "YOU TUBE" highlight movement doesn't help at all either in which they glorify dunks and one on one moves. Those things in combination with selfish minded parents make a coaches job tuff. That players issues can rub off on or offend his or her fellow teammates. Player listens less to instruction and more to the parent which makes it less possible for a player's performance to be good and forces the coach to shortened the players minutes which further fuels the source of what caused the problem in the first place!!!!! Its just messy. I mean can you tell me Lebron's stats from grade school AAU season's??Uh no, I didn't think so. That's the time for them to develop the bball IQ and their individual skills. Its sad for some players. As if they're not up against enough with millions of other up and coming players that want to achieve the same goals with the game of basketball, the parents could be the biggest stumbling block of all. So parents lets check ourselves by getting a good scope of the game, teaching our kids to focus on the values that should be learned through the game, teach selfishness and respect for the coach!!

Flow Like Rivers

Duke set out this season with more unanswered questions than most seasons. One of the questions being asked is, who was gonna lead on the floor?  Who was gonna be the one that put the team on their back when the moment came? Who could be the one to embrace the pressured moments? Even Coach K was waiting to see who would emerge. Well unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know who has stepped out from the pack to be the teams "killer instinct".......Austin Rivers! Yes after hitting an iconic three point shot in the country's biggest rivalry, Duke/UNC game just last week, Rivers hits the go ahead three last night against N.C. State with less than 2 minutes to go, after being down of 20! Now I don't want to disregard the 21 second half points that Seth Curry put up at all. Curry was huge for Duke, I mean absolutely unconscious but along with some other big baskets and with Duke never previously leading in this game, down 2pts with a minute and some change left in regulation, Austin pulls up from 3 feet behind the three point line calmly and confidently, knocking down the mile long shot to put the Blue Devils ahead for good. Its not a fluke at all people. The kid has heart. Doc's boy may be sealing his claim on quite a few freshman and conference awards. In not long, the "will he go pro" questions will start pouring in and at the rate of his adaptation to the college game he may be projected pretty high in the draft by season's end. But if he does in fact come back for year 2 look out, he may just get my pick for National Player of the Year!

Snaer of the Seminoles

This isn't going to be a long blog here, its simple. Michael Snare just upset a top 5 ranked Duke 2 weeks ago on their home floor at the buzzer. No one found him in transition and he flared out to the three point arc, caught the kick out pass and let the three fly right before the buzzer and put the Blue Devils away with no time on the buzzer. That was just one of quite a few, last minute heroics for Snaer this year. With that being said, tonight, after blowing a 15 point lead, how did the VT Hokies allow the ball to be swung to this guy, on his favorite spot, with only seconds left????? Well just in case they were yet unsure why that may not be a great idea, uh....he reminded them!!   3pt dagger, again at the buzzer!! When will they learn Michael, when will they learn

High School Basketball's Most Wanted : Shabazz Muhammad

Introducing to those who don't know, and presenting to those that do, the nations #1 High School recruit according to Rivals.com, all the way from Bishop Gorman School in Las Vegas, Nevada, Shabaaaaaaaaaz Muhaaaaaaaammad!!!!!! Yes, the undecided 6'6 swing man, is the nation's top prospect and is on the radar of all the top college prospect in the country. Shabazz Muhammad is a 6'6, 220 pound lefty, was not always a hugely hyped player nor on the radar as he is now but that's what makes this such a solid ranking because Muhammad worked his butt off to climb to number 1. In fact his high school coach said that as a freshman, he wouldn't even be ranked in the top 5 of just the freshman class in just Las Vegas but since then, along side a huge growth spurt, Shabazz worked tirelessly on his game to earn holding that top recruit spot. He's quick, athletic and has a smooth left handed release on his jump shot. His, "around the rim" instincts are superb as well, especially on the shot follow in which he as a great niche for. His wing span allows him to defend the perimeter very well and swat some shots too. He looks as if he would work well in any solid system, with him not being a selfish type player. So who does this kid have on his short list as his potential college for next year? Well this top of his list includes Duke, UNLV, Kentucky and UCLA. He has already visited Kentucky back in the fall and is scheduled to visit Duke in early March. It will probably be April before Muhammad announces his decision. Who ever he chooses is definitely set to receive big reward for "High School's Most Wanted" baller!

Lin The Of Knick Of Time!

Well, it speaks for itself..... Linsanity, if not all ready, is now underway! Tonight he led the New York Knicks back from a deficit to tie things up with just seconds left. Then just as Austin Rivers ofDuke did last week, Lin calmly watched the clock as it began to whine down.....4,3,2 then he pulled up for the three and....in it went!!!!! Even the people, in Toronto cheered for Jeremy after that shot dropped. Seriously? I mean is this guy really serious? Make no mistake, Jeremy Lin is a true talent. He just didn't pop up out of thin air. That just goes to show you how politics are played in basketball, how much true talent isn't given a chance over hype sometimes. He is the underdog's hero for sure. A true American story. We're loving it Lin, keep up the good work, pumping back into the New York Knicks, one of the NBA's most popular franchises. We're watching.......

Fresh Like A Billion!! AIr Jordan 4 Release Feb. 18, 2012

This iconic Jordan shoe was originally released in 1989 and will be released again February 18th for the world to enjoy all over again. For those who old enough to actually remember mike playing in these shoes, it probably means a little more. Wearing these will bring back those memories of the young, fearless Mike that was on his way up the ladder of success, trying to get over the hump, fighting for a championship. They take you back to a moment in time, the music, the fashion, the league, etc. Hopefully the release will be a safer release than the concords but the Air Jordan 4's are definitely must haves!!! Enjoy my fellow sneaker heads.

Let me take you young punks back so you'll know what these kicks are all about!

Can Lin, Amare' and Melo Co-Exist?

Well we are all aware of the NY Knicks prayers for a point guard being answered by the unexpected great play of Jeremy Lin, a player that had been juggled around from a number of teams in 1 1/2 seasons and was at the end of the Knick bench as well. The question is as the two superstars, Amare and Melo, return to the line up, will Lin be able to continue great play and the Knicks continue their winning streak. Lin is a point guard that can score, not necessarily a shoot first point guard but many people feel that Melo is a offensive black hole that the ball disappears into and thats what scares Knick fans the most. Melo is a natural born scorer and does do it from one on one situations where in he hangs on to the ball quite a bit. Will this take away from the current momentum that the Knicks have with Lin at the helm?? Not many are worried about Lin's chemistry with Amare because of the system of head coach Mike D'Antoni. It's the same fast paced, pick and role styled offense that Amare played in Phoenix with all-star guard Steve Nash. We'll see how the chemistry plays out. All of the big 3 (Chandler, Melo, Amare)  are excited about Lin and maybe they're considering referring to the Knick power players as the big 4!!!!!

Not Just Doc's Son, Austin's the Name!

Seeing that this kid was the top recruit coming out of high school last year, the son of former NBA player and current coach Doc Rivers and is leading Duke in scoring as a freshman guard, you should've already been aware of who is was but just in case you didn't know who he was prior to last night, now you know......Austin Rivers is the name! He introduced himself to the spotlight officially last night. He'll be etched in the history the great Duke/UNC rivalry forever. With the pressure of this great match-up and back to back losses for a coach that really doesn't do those, on his back, he delivered a game winning, three point, buzzer beater. Ice cold, cold blooded and whatever else you want to call it, he's got a little killer in him. Needless to say, he's real! If you happened to have missed it, here's you chance to relive it!!!!

"Lin" Me A Hand: Jeremy Lin To The Rescue

Other than the Giants going to and later winning the Super Bowl, the Knick's recent struggles were the talk of the town in NY. What was the problem? Well as always in recent time, defense and good, consistent, guard play. They needed that spark, they needed some life and the big three weren't quite getting it done. So what would be the answer? Who would they call on? The city was getting restless and then.....JEREMY LIN!! Yep I said Jeremy Lin, the second year, former Harvard standout. He has set the city on fire since being called on three games ago.  In his three starts he has averaged 25pts and 8assist without all of the big three combo present in the same game.  On top of those #s,  all three of those games resulted in W's. Go Jeremy Go! This kid is very skilled and quicker than defenders think. Keep your eyes on this kid, this may be an explosion right before our eyes!

Hate On, Hate On...

For all of the die hard Jordan heads out there who are oblivious and refuse to face the fact that Kobe is a substantial argument for GOAT at his position, this doesn't  make you happy. In fact you probably hate the fact that last night, in the first half of the Lakers vs. Phila match-up, Kobe Bryant passed Shaquille O'Neal for 5th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Just one other incredible accomplishment of the many that Kobe has, with many more to come. From 5 rings to scoring titles to All-Star MVP's to 12 three pointers made in a single game, 81 points in a game, 62 in three quarters,  breaking the Madison Square Garden scoring record with 61 points,  first player in their 16th season to score 40 or more 4 consecutive games, 9 straight games over 40, on and on...... How ironic that in passing Shaq on the All-Time scoring list, O'Neal tweeted congrats to Kobe becoming the greatest Laker of all-time and being the reason that they were the greatest duo ever. The same guy that everyone said Kobe would never capture a ring without. funny right?

BLUNK....Blake's Dunk That Won't Be Forgotten

Blake Griffin has shown us that if he has a lengthy career, he could very well be the most exciting player to watch of all time, but you knew something crazier was coming. Something to make you blink, wipe your eyes and make sure you weren't dreaming. Something that would lockup Twitter. Something even more iconic than the already iconic dunks he's put out there. As I was just about to pan the channel over to check on another game when it happened, the dunk we'll never forget.......................

Elena Delle Donne "The Best Women's Player You May Not Know"

Women's college basketball is as star studded and star player, publicized as its ever been with names such as UConn's recently graduated star, Mya Moore , Baylor's Brittany Griner, Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins and several more but the name you need to know if you don't already is, Elena Delle Donne of Delaware University!!!!
She isn't an over night hype though. Actually she has been putting out phenomenal play on every stage for a while now. Let's go back a little. Elena Delle Donne played high school basketball at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delaware where she led her team to three straight state championship titles and was ranked #1 overall high school  by Scout.com. She was the first and only player thus far to score over 2000 points in their high school career at that school and also set a high school national record with 80 consecutive free throws made. Approaching the end of her prep career, Elena was the most recruited player in the nation since Candace Parker and received a basketball scholarship to UConn, womens college basketballs most powerful program in recent years. Due to not wanting to separate from her family, namely her sister that is blind and deaf as a result of cerebral palsy, she elected to leave summer school at UConn and attend the University of Delaware, right there at home. In her freshman season, Elena averaged a ridiculous 26.7 points per (3rd ppg nationwide) , including 54 pts on February 10, 2010.Needless to say she won the CAA's Player of the Year and Rookie of the year in the same year. No men had ever won both awards in one season.
In her sophomore season, she began suffering from flu like symptoms to the point where in she even asked to be taken out of a game. Following that situation, test were run and doctors found that Elena suffered from Lyme's disease. She still managed to help her team to the conference tournament finals and to the NIT Tournament.
She was named to the 2011 USA Basketball team for the World University Games in China where she led the team to the Gold Medal with a 6-0 record and averages of 15.7 ppg, 8.5 rebounds, and 3 assist per game.
Now in her Junior season, she is lighting it up leading the nation in scoring with 27.9 per game currently. Bottom line....she is for real. She's a versatile 6'5 player that plays just as hard on both ends. If you didn't know, now you know. Elena Delle Donne is a lady baller to watch out for.....
