The Parents: A Youth Basketball Coaches Biggest Obstacle

In my few years of coaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade boys AAU basketball and varsity girls high school basketball, there have been quite a few things that standout to me as constants more than other things, one being the influence of the parents mindset on the player and the coach/player interaction and relationship. Its unbelievable how parents bring there child to your program, that you do planning, preparation, giving lots of time and hard work to see out but then turn right around and want to go against you as a coach in many ways, as if you are insufficient. What's funny is, mot of the parents are TOTALLY delusional  about the game of basketball as a whole and there child's own game. The problem stems from a selfish mindset of the parent from the outset (which is like poison to a young player), where in the parents agenda is for their child to be highly praised, glorified and touted. Every parent prematurely views their"baby" as a superstar. They come in feeling as if their child is the "next big thing". A very self centered mindset that is all about their child, giving very little emphasis to TEAM! This gets the young player comfortable withbucking against their coach and ok with challenging authority. That's the foundation for all the other problems that follow; they're not getting enough minutes, they should be used in a different capacity, they shouldn't be coming off of the bench, accusations of the coach having favorites or just not liking their child, on and on and on! Its embedded in the child's mind so then the child's scope of the game becomes self centered and based upon only the most flashy, hyped parts of the game like the shots, fancy dribble moves, and dunks. The new "YOU TUBE" highlight movement doesn't help at all either in which they glorify dunks and one on one moves. Those things in combination with selfish minded parents make a coaches job tuff. That players issues can rub off on or offend his or her fellow teammates. Player listens less to instruction and more to the parent which makes it less possible for a player's performance to be good and forces the coach to shortened the players minutes which further fuels the source of what caused the problem in the first place!!!!! Its just messy. I mean can you tell me Lebron's stats from grade school AAU season's??Uh no, I didn't think so. That's the time for them to develop the bball IQ and their individual skills. Its sad for some players. As if they're not up against enough with millions of other up and coming players that want to achieve the same goals with the game of basketball, the parents could be the biggest stumbling block of all. So parents lets check ourselves by getting a good scope of the game, teaching our kids to focus on the values that should be learned through the game, teach selfishness and respect for the coach!!

Flow Like Rivers

Duke set out this season with more unanswered questions than most seasons. One of the questions being asked is, who was gonna lead on the floor?  Who was gonna be the one that put the team on their back when the moment came? Who could be the one to embrace the pressured moments? Even Coach K was waiting to see who would emerge. Well unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know who has stepped out from the pack to be the teams "killer instinct".......Austin Rivers! Yes after hitting an iconic three point shot in the country's biggest rivalry, Duke/UNC game just last week, Rivers hits the go ahead three last night against N.C. State with less than 2 minutes to go, after being down of 20! Now I don't want to disregard the 21 second half points that Seth Curry put up at all. Curry was huge for Duke, I mean absolutely unconscious but along with some other big baskets and with Duke never previously leading in this game, down 2pts with a minute and some change left in regulation, Austin pulls up from 3 feet behind the three point line calmly and confidently, knocking down the mile long shot to put the Blue Devils ahead for good. Its not a fluke at all people. The kid has heart. Doc's boy may be sealing his claim on quite a few freshman and conference awards. In not long, the "will he go pro" questions will start pouring in and at the rate of his adaptation to the college game he may be projected pretty high in the draft by season's end. But if he does in fact come back for year 2 look out, he may just get my pick for National Player of the Year!

Snaer of the Seminoles

This isn't going to be a long blog here, its simple. Michael Snare just upset a top 5 ranked Duke 2 weeks ago on their home floor at the buzzer. No one found him in transition and he flared out to the three point arc, caught the kick out pass and let the three fly right before the buzzer and put the Blue Devils away with no time on the buzzer. That was just one of quite a few, last minute heroics for Snaer this year. With that being said, tonight, after blowing a 15 point lead, how did the VT Hokies allow the ball to be swung to this guy, on his favorite spot, with only seconds left????? Well just in case they were yet unsure why that may not be a great idea, uh....he reminded them!!   3pt dagger, again at the buzzer!! When will they learn Michael, when will they learn

High School Basketball's Most Wanted : Shabazz Muhammad

Introducing to those who don't know, and presenting to those that do, the nations #1 High School recruit according to Rivals.com, all the way from Bishop Gorman School in Las Vegas, Nevada, Shabaaaaaaaaaz Muhaaaaaaaammad!!!!!! Yes, the undecided 6'6 swing man, is the nation's top prospect and is on the radar of all the top college prospect in the country. Shabazz Muhammad is a 6'6, 220 pound lefty, was not always a hugely hyped player nor on the radar as he is now but that's what makes this such a solid ranking because Muhammad worked his butt off to climb to number 1. In fact his high school coach said that as a freshman, he wouldn't even be ranked in the top 5 of just the freshman class in just Las Vegas but since then, along side a huge growth spurt, Shabazz worked tirelessly on his game to earn holding that top recruit spot. He's quick, athletic and has a smooth left handed release on his jump shot. His, "around the rim" instincts are superb as well, especially on the shot follow in which he as a great niche for. His wing span allows him to defend the perimeter very well and swat some shots too. He looks as if he would work well in any solid system, with him not being a selfish type player. So who does this kid have on his short list as his potential college for next year? Well this top of his list includes Duke, UNLV, Kentucky and UCLA. He has already visited Kentucky back in the fall and is scheduled to visit Duke in early March. It will probably be April before Muhammad announces his decision. Who ever he chooses is definitely set to receive big reward for "High School's Most Wanted" baller!

Lin The Of Knick Of Time!

Well, it speaks for itself..... Linsanity, if not all ready, is now underway! Tonight he led the New York Knicks back from a deficit to tie things up with just seconds left. Then just as Austin Rivers ofDuke did last week, Lin calmly watched the clock as it began to whine down.....4,3,2 then he pulled up for the three and....in it went!!!!! Even the people, in Toronto cheered for Jeremy after that shot dropped. Seriously? I mean is this guy really serious? Make no mistake, Jeremy Lin is a true talent. He just didn't pop up out of thin air. That just goes to show you how politics are played in basketball, how much true talent isn't given a chance over hype sometimes. He is the underdog's hero for sure. A true American story. We're loving it Lin, keep up the good work, pumping back into the New York Knicks, one of the NBA's most popular franchises. We're watching.......

Fresh Like A Billion!! AIr Jordan 4 Release Feb. 18, 2012

This iconic Jordan shoe was originally released in 1989 and will be released again February 18th for the world to enjoy all over again. For those who old enough to actually remember mike playing in these shoes, it probably means a little more. Wearing these will bring back those memories of the young, fearless Mike that was on his way up the ladder of success, trying to get over the hump, fighting for a championship. They take you back to a moment in time, the music, the fashion, the league, etc. Hopefully the release will be a safer release than the concords but the Air Jordan 4's are definitely must haves!!! Enjoy my fellow sneaker heads.

Let me take you young punks back so you'll know what these kicks are all about!

Can Lin, Amare' and Melo Co-Exist?

Well we are all aware of the NY Knicks prayers for a point guard being answered by the unexpected great play of Jeremy Lin, a player that had been juggled around from a number of teams in 1 1/2 seasons and was at the end of the Knick bench as well. The question is as the two superstars, Amare and Melo, return to the line up, will Lin be able to continue great play and the Knicks continue their winning streak. Lin is a point guard that can score, not necessarily a shoot first point guard but many people feel that Melo is a offensive black hole that the ball disappears into and thats what scares Knick fans the most. Melo is a natural born scorer and does do it from one on one situations where in he hangs on to the ball quite a bit. Will this take away from the current momentum that the Knicks have with Lin at the helm?? Not many are worried about Lin's chemistry with Amare because of the system of head coach Mike D'Antoni. It's the same fast paced, pick and role styled offense that Amare played in Phoenix with all-star guard Steve Nash. We'll see how the chemistry plays out. All of the big 3 (Chandler, Melo, Amare)  are excited about Lin and maybe they're considering referring to the Knick power players as the big 4!!!!!

Not Just Doc's Son, Austin's the Name!

Seeing that this kid was the top recruit coming out of high school last year, the son of former NBA player and current coach Doc Rivers and is leading Duke in scoring as a freshman guard, you should've already been aware of who is was but just in case you didn't know who he was prior to last night, now you know......Austin Rivers is the name! He introduced himself to the spotlight officially last night. He'll be etched in the history the great Duke/UNC rivalry forever. With the pressure of this great match-up and back to back losses for a coach that really doesn't do those, on his back, he delivered a game winning, three point, buzzer beater. Ice cold, cold blooded and whatever else you want to call it, he's got a little killer in him. Needless to say, he's real! If you happened to have missed it, here's you chance to relive it!!!!

"Lin" Me A Hand: Jeremy Lin To The Rescue

Other than the Giants going to and later winning the Super Bowl, the Knick's recent struggles were the talk of the town in NY. What was the problem? Well as always in recent time, defense and good, consistent, guard play. They needed that spark, they needed some life and the big three weren't quite getting it done. So what would be the answer? Who would they call on? The city was getting restless and then.....JEREMY LIN!! Yep I said Jeremy Lin, the second year, former Harvard standout. He has set the city on fire since being called on three games ago.  In his three starts he has averaged 25pts and 8assist without all of the big three combo present in the same game.  On top of those #s,  all three of those games resulted in W's. Go Jeremy Go! This kid is very skilled and quicker than defenders think. Keep your eyes on this kid, this may be an explosion right before our eyes!

Hate On, Hate On...

For all of the die hard Jordan heads out there who are oblivious and refuse to face the fact that Kobe is a substantial argument for GOAT at his position, this doesn't  make you happy. In fact you probably hate the fact that last night, in the first half of the Lakers vs. Phila match-up, Kobe Bryant passed Shaquille O'Neal for 5th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Just one other incredible accomplishment of the many that Kobe has, with many more to come. From 5 rings to scoring titles to All-Star MVP's to 12 three pointers made in a single game, 81 points in a game, 62 in three quarters,  breaking the Madison Square Garden scoring record with 61 points,  first player in their 16th season to score 40 or more 4 consecutive games, 9 straight games over 40, on and on...... How ironic that in passing Shaq on the All-Time scoring list, O'Neal tweeted congrats to Kobe becoming the greatest Laker of all-time and being the reason that they were the greatest duo ever. The same guy that everyone said Kobe would never capture a ring without. funny right?

BLUNK....Blake's Dunk That Won't Be Forgotten

Blake Griffin has shown us that if he has a lengthy career, he could very well be the most exciting player to watch of all time, but you knew something crazier was coming. Something to make you blink, wipe your eyes and make sure you weren't dreaming. Something that would lockup Twitter. Something even more iconic than the already iconic dunks he's put out there. As I was just about to pan the channel over to check on another game when it happened, the dunk we'll never forget.......................
